I am sourcing a fractional copywriter for one of my clients right now. And there is one requirement that came with the brief that I honestly did not expect to get a reaction from anyone.
No AI.
I thought people would be thrilled. Someone is asking for a real human. Someone actually values what you bring that a machine cannot replicate. I figured that would land as good news.
Instead everyone wanted to know why.
Here is the reason.
This client has built something that does not exist yet. A completely new market category. And every single time AI is used to write their content, it defaults back to the old market. It rewrites their messaging for the wrong buyer. Their engineering team has even tried to build workarounds. Nothing has fixed it.
And that is when it clicked for me.
AI is really good at recognizing patterns. That is also exactly why it fails when there is no pattern to recognize yet.
It cannot think outside the box it was trained on. So it keeps pulling the content back toward what already exists, toward the buyer it already knows, toward the message that already sounds familiar.
If what you are building is genuinely new, AI will keep sanding down your edges until you sound like everyone else.
This is not an argument against AI. I use it constantly. But it is a reminder that a tool can only take you as far as what it was built to understand. When the strategy requires something that has never been done before, you need a human who can actually think in that space.
And if you are a fractional leader trying to stand out in a crowded market, this applies to you too.
AI will keep pulling your positioning toward what already exists. It will keep making you sound like the other fractionals it has already seen. The work of figuring out what makes you different, what your actual value is, and who your real buyer is, that is still human work. Nobody can do that part for you.
That is true for content. It is also true for how you position yourself, how you build your offers, and how you show up in the market.
The machine can amplify what is already clear. It cannot find the clarity for you.
